how up on linux are you? thats by far the best way to do it... I recommend getting virtualbox and doing a gentoo vm
tmopar · Mon May 22, 2017 08:08 PM UTC · #3100
it will take you a little while to set this up
tmopar · Mon May 22, 2017 08:08 PM UTC · #3102
but once you have it, you can configure it to do any kind of mining rig almost
Kirbyfez · Mon May 22, 2017 08:09 PM UTC · #3103
I have considering doing it on linux, and would be able to do it... but meh, stressful
i’d rather just to CPU.. considering i dont do this for profit but more just for fun..
tmopar · Mon May 22, 2017 08:10 PM UTC · #3105
if you dont wanna go the VM approach, you can dual boot into ubuntu
tmopar · Mon May 22, 2017 08:10 PM UTC · #3106
there are many guides step by step on how to get it going
piet · Mon May 22, 2017 08:10 PM UTC · #3107
it needs www in front of it
Kirbyfez · Mon May 22, 2017 08:10 PM UTC · #3108
mining Sia for example now.. at 318.97 MH/s wont give me shit.. but its fun
tmopar · Mon May 22, 2017 08:11 PM UTC · #3109
i dont really trust windows binaries out in the world, its just too common of a target and you get the source when you go with Gentoo so you compile it yourself but it does it for you
Kirbyfez · Mon May 22, 2017 08:12 PM UTC · #3110
considering getting a asic miner.. but that would be more if i wanted profit.. living in asia at the moment with insane electricity costs so no change it would be worth it sadly
tmopar · Mon May 22, 2017 08:14 PM UTC · #3115
you got everything you need except the miner, and they are guarded fiercely now
tmopar · Mon May 22, 2017 08:14 PM UTC · #3116
its hard to find a genuine bargain upon ebay
tmopar · Mon May 22, 2017 08:14 PM UTC · #3117
i bought in right before the market went up
tmopar · Mon May 22, 2017 08:14 PM UTC · #3119
night and day comparison now
Kirbyfez · Mon May 22, 2017 08:14 PM UTC · #3120
i do know where I can get a few,but they are kinda expensive.. few hundred bucks
Kirbyfez · Mon May 22, 2017 08:14 PM UTC · #3121
would need them shipped from Norway tho
tmopar · Mon May 22, 2017 08:14 PM UTC · #3122
dont waste your money on anything on there right now
tmopar · Mon May 22, 2017 08:15 PM UTC · #3123
if you wanna get it, save up a G or two
tmopar · Mon May 22, 2017 08:15 PM UTC · #3126
if you see them under 700 snap em up, i got my dominator (half mind you 128 model) for a G about a month ago
tmopar · Mon May 22, 2017 08:15 PM UTC · #3127
terminators go for about 700 now
Kirbyfez · Mon May 22, 2017 08:16 PM UTC · #3128
and how long do you have to have it running before its worth it?
tmopar · Mon May 22, 2017 08:21 PM UTC · #3130
it depends on how much your power is
tmopar · Mon May 22, 2017 08:21 PM UTC · #3132
i dont need to live off the money
tmopar · Mon May 22, 2017 08:21 PM UTC · #3133
and i can afford to lose on the electric because the coins to me are an investment
tmopar · Mon May 22, 2017 08:22 PM UTC · #3134
if you had spent a lot of time mining bitcoins and held on to them from years ago, look today, 2200~
Kirbyfez · Mon May 22, 2017 08:22 PM UTC · #3135
i’m currently running MinerGate but it feels like its complete crap.. but it works i guess.. thought prohashing was kinda simple as well
tmopar · Mon May 22, 2017 08:22 PM UTC · #3136
you need to have the asic
tmopar · Mon May 22, 2017 08:22 PM UTC · #3138
and the miner software going for it
tmopar · Mon May 22, 2017 08:23 PM UTC · #3140
you need a working miner that supports it... the only one i ever messed with was BFgminer and only under linux
tmopar · Mon May 22, 2017 08:23 PM UTC · #3141
if you just wanna get started
tmopar · Mon May 22, 2017 08:23 PM UTC · #3142
i recommend getting a few gridseeds
tmopar · Mon May 22, 2017 08:23 PM UTC · #3145
they are reasonable amounts too
tmopar · Mon May 22, 2017 08:24 PM UTC · #3146
theres a woman selling 9 in a box for 80 bucks
tmopar · Mon May 22, 2017 08:24 PM UTC · #3147
i think 9 of them will net you 2.7 M/hash
tmopar · Mon May 22, 2017 08:24 PM UTC · #3148
no speed demon but you will hang some poitns on the board
Kirbyfez · Mon May 22, 2017 08:25 PM UTC · #3150
Saw those little USB asic miners.. how do they work?
tmopar · Mon May 22, 2017 08:25 PM UTC · #3151
go to ebay and just type in litecoin miner or scrypt miner
tmopar · Mon May 22, 2017 08:25 PM UTC · #3153
you get the VM going or just dual boot, and plug them into the computer
tmopar · Mon May 22, 2017 08:25 PM UTC · #3155
it talks to them using your computers internet, and they give back the answers
tmopar · Mon May 22, 2017 08:26 PM UTC · #3157
really, 8 of them to equal one 60 watt edison bulb
Kirbyfez · Mon May 22, 2017 08:27 PM UTC · #3158
can you get them working via say a raspberry pi? For example getting one of those, connecting a high power usb hub module.. then connect shit loads of those usb miners?
tmopar · Mon May 22, 2017 08:30 PM UTC · #3160
but the old raspis arent so good
tmopar · Mon May 22, 2017 08:30 PM UTC · #3162
and get a real good power supply, i usually take old PC power supplies and isolate the 5v rail
tmopar · Mon May 22, 2017 08:31 PM UTC · #3163
its cheaper and better quality than the stuff off ebay and just takes a little time
tmopar · Mon May 22, 2017 08:31 PM UTC · #3164
be sure to solder the connections
Kirbyfez · Mon May 22, 2017 08:31 PM UTC · #3165
But really there is no ROI? it’s just all for investment?.. in hope it will get either further up?
tmopar · Mon May 22, 2017 08:31 PM UTC · #3166
raspis need all the voltage
tmopar · Mon May 22, 2017 08:31 PM UTC · #3167
you will get ROI over time... i wouldnt personally recommend selling the coins
tmopar · Mon May 22, 2017 08:31 PM UTC · #3168
the miner will hold its value
tmopar · Mon May 22, 2017 08:32 PM UTC · #3169
I just sold a 333 mh miner on ebay for 30 bucks
tmopar · Mon May 22, 2017 08:32 PM UTC · #3171
bout what i paid for it 4 years ago
tmopar · Mon May 22, 2017 08:33 PM UTC · #3172
some people also run mining contracts, where you rent your mining power out to someone who doesnt have any
tmopar · Mon May 22, 2017 08:34 PM UTC · #3173
i am considering doing that myself once my position solidifies
tmopar · Mon May 22, 2017 08:34 PM UTC · #3174
they dont have to worry about the electric or complexity etc, just pay and mine for them in their name
Kirbyfez · Mon May 22, 2017 08:35 PM UTC · #3176
yeeaaa, i used to rent a mining rig... had 900 eth... sold them when they werent worth shit.. kinda regret that now to be honest
tmopar · Mon May 22, 2017 08:35 PM UTC · #3177
wow really? man thats rough
tmopar · Mon May 22, 2017 08:35 PM UTC · #3178
thats 50 gs or something now aint it???
tmopar · Mon May 22, 2017 08:36 PM UTC · #3180
man.... you aint got any of em left?
Kirbyfez · Mon May 22, 2017 08:37 PM UTC · #3181
worse with my btc.. was mining for 4 years.. had 1500 coins before i left. just kept going after i moved away from Norway... after 4 years, the computer was formatted.. i’ll actually go back there in a month and i’ll finally have my hands on the hard drives again, hoping i can recover my wallet.. if i can.. then i’ll be a couple million richer haha
Kirbyfez · Mon May 22, 2017 08:37 PM UTC · #3183
i have 0.6 eth... the history where it shows i sold it is sad tho haha
Kirbyfez · Mon May 22, 2017 08:38 PM UTC · #3186
i bought btc back when it wasnt worth anything at all.. was an investment, but i forgot about it.. but had a machine mining
Kirbyfez · Mon May 22, 2017 08:38 PM UTC · #3187
naaaah, my father formatted it.. Nope, hasnt been used since so hopefully still a chance.. will run some recovery software on it.. but i dont know if i mined on a pool or solo.. if i find it, i need to check my algs and see.. i’m scared to hope for anything, but it would change my life if i can recover those coins
tmopar · Mon May 22, 2017 08:39 PM UTC · #3188
i would consider taking that to a professional
tmopar · Mon May 22, 2017 08:39 PM UTC · #3189
there are machines that can read the plates directly
tmopar · Mon May 22, 2017 08:39 PM UTC · #3190
really sensitive heads and magnets
Kirbyfez · Mon May 22, 2017 08:39 PM UTC · #3191
only reason i know it was still mining is that my dad called me AFTER he formatted it.. said what he did, and then mentioned a black cmd window running and i remember it all... haha, never had a bigger freak attack lol
tmopar · Mon May 22, 2017 08:39 PM UTC · #3192
beaucoups dollars though but worht it for a come up like that
tmopar · Mon May 22, 2017 08:40 PM UTC · #3193
man thats like a shipwreck to me
Kirbyfez · Mon May 22, 2017 08:40 PM UTC · #3194
sadly i dont have the money to send them in to get them checked, so i’ll just run some recovery software on it and see what i can find.. If I see any traces, then i’ll dig deeper
tmopar · Mon May 22, 2017 08:40 PM UTC · #3195
thinking about all those dubloons on the floor lol
Kirbyfez · Mon May 22, 2017 08:42 PM UTC · #3196
Thats life, oh well.. I’ll find out in July! it has kept me awake for days and days before.. but mostly i’ve given up
tmopar · Mon May 22, 2017 08:42 PM UTC · #3197
best of luck to you on that one... I used something called getdatabacksimple .... for NTFS drives it worked pretty well
tmopar · Mon May 22, 2017 08:43 PM UTC · #3198
its about 80 bucks for the software i think
