thats what you have to do, test the waters for yourself

dsldsl999 · · #28410

yes

hashingpro · · #28411

someone elses' cold water might be your preferring temp./

dsldsl999 · · #28412

my friends and i will each be using a different pool for a couple of days and then compare the payout

JustAnotherPLT · · #28413

We can make excuses for everything related. Argue one site to another, but why take someone else’s word for it? Do you make your own judgments or listen to people who think they know?

JustAnotherPLT · · #28414

I fault no one for figuring things out themselves.

hashingpro · · #28415

and then swap your numbers for a few days and then compare

dsldsl999 · · #28416

yup

hashingpro · · #28417

stop back in and let us know what you find out.

dsldsl999 · · #28418

sure

If you are immediately selling off your mining earnings for cash, then I agree, It’s not worth it. If you are mining and holding on for dear life, then I see value in OC’ing. $2 a day now may not be much, but that is 1 extra LTC a month. If in 6 to 12 months time the LTC is worth $100 or more, that could be an extra $1,200 dollars a year. (12 extra LTC mined over 12 months). If you keep your temps down and check it with an IR temp gun vs trusting the antminer UI, I say go for it. Which is what I do. I OC to 450 and all my temps stay at between 54 and 51 degrees. If the brothers are right and script is only paying a penny per Mh, You’ll be wishing you had that extra LTC per month. ;)

Brandonloves2fly · · #28420

*between 54 and 61 degrees*

hashingpro · · #28421

yep until that machine pops in 2 months and you think wow I got 200$ in extra ltc and no place to buy new gear from at $200 mark.

dsldsl999 · · #28422

Well I dun planned to keep the L3 for life, it will probably become non profitable within 1 year. OC it reducing its overall life is not something i care about. what i care is if it pops in 3-6 months or less.

dsldsl999 · · #28423

but 54-61 degress should be ok i guess

dsldsl999 · · #28424

i dun like to see anything in the 70s

hashingpro · · #28425

unless its really 70-76 right now.

dsldsl999 · · #28426

true

hashingpro · · #28427

the firmware reset the temps down 5 degrees. They didnt change out the temp sensors, so if a firmware can make them seem 5'C less, how accurate is that temp sensor really?

dsldsl999 · · #28428

there is no harm double checking it with another device just to make sure the temps on the gui is accurate

dsldsl999 · · #28429

actually i might get an IR gun to check if it is not too expensive

hashingpro · · #28430

they are like 8-10 bucks.

dsldsl999 · · #28431

well how accurate are those for 8-10 bucks

hashingpro · · #28432

1 decimal point accurate

hashingpro · · #28433

50.1 may be + - .1 degree

dsldsl999 · · #28434

ok

hashingpro · · #28435

even if its 1 degree, where 50 could mean 49 or 51 thats still better than going on a sensor that has already had its temp reduced via a firmware patch. obviously they could just tune them again and again via firmware

dsldsl999 · · #28436

i already bought a sound level meter for it so no harm getting an ir gun as well

hashingpro · · #28437

maybe they hope if they can roll the temp down, more folks will OC and blow them up on the bad temps and have to buy MORE machines!

hashingpro · · #28438

watt meter?

hashingpro · · #28439

15 amp surge protector?

JustAnotherPLT · · #28440

Literally just bought one on Amazon. I OC as well, might as well make something while we can knowing this isn’t going to last with current hashing power.

dsldsl999 · · #28441

db meter to measure how nosiey it gets

hashingpro · · #28442

20 of them are as silent as can be

JustAnotherPLT · · #28443

Have you ever heard of someone blowing one of these machines?

hashingpro · · #28444

when they are located 4 blocks away!

JustAnotherPLT · · #28445

I have not heard of anyone blowing a machine, personally.

dsldsl999 · · #28446

yes on youtube someone blown one up right?

hashingpro · · #28447

no, but lets be real, everyone will brag they got up to 650 hash on their miner, most will never say if opps i blew up a $2000 miner.

hashingpro · · #28448

the first person who does will video it and try to get 1 million hits

JustAnotherPLT · · #28449

Ive OCed many things that I own with no issues.

dsldsl999 · · #28450

i OC my RX580 no issues

hashingpro · · #28451

as long as you can afford to replace it or do without it if its lost

hashingpro · · #28452

just like investing, never invest what you cant afford to lose

hashingpro · · #28453

never OC equipment you couldnt be without.

JustAnotherPLT · · #28454

@hash, couldnt agree more. Or at least pay to be repaired.

hashingpro · · #28455

not sure how you would repair it, just replace it

JustAnotherPLT · · #28456

Send it back, they repair/replace

JustAnotherPLT · · #28457

for a hefty fee I’m sure.

hashingpro · · #28458

not after you OC it voids the warrnety

JustAnotherPLT · · #28459

I’m not talking warranty. They still repair your device out of warranty.

JustAnotherPLT · · #28460

Says so on original paper work

hashingpro · · #28461

do they?

JustAnotherPLT · · #28462

Yessir

hashingpro · · #28463

maybe i misread the sentence

JustAnotherPLT · · #28464

How do you read it?

hashingpro · · #28465

i read it once 3 weeks ago

hashingpro · · #28466

i read it as no warranrty no fixage.

hashingpro · · #28467

now i have to go and DL a new copy of that stupid form letter

JustAnotherPLT · · #28468

I see, I read it as fixable for a price. Even says charged at "current repair" rate

hashingpro · · #28469

doesnt say these things will void the warrenty and we are not liable for any repairs?

JustAnotherPLT · · #28470

I’m on the road, as usual, but if you get a copy, post on here what it says. If not I can when I get home.

dsldsl999 · · #28471

just ordered IR gun

dsldsl999 · · #28472

i really like prime next day delivery!

JustAnotherPLT · · #28473

I did the same, also used prime

SpacedCowboy · · #28474

So if I’m mining LTC (because the pool chooses it), and being paid in LTC, is there less fee (since there’s no trading fees for conversion from xxx to LTC) or is this just a bonus-for-the-boys when this happens ?

dsldsl999 · · #28475

well there is only one fee

dsldsl999 · · #28476

so convert or not u pay the same

dsldsl999 · · #28477

since the pool will not choose to mine LTC all the time so the fee makes up for all the other conversions

dsldsl999 · · #28478

this is what i think anything

dsldsl999 · · #28479

i wonder on the L3, which board is No.1, it is always hotter than the rest

bluelemonadecrypto · · #28480

@GregoryCHarding - re overclocking

bluelemonadecrypto · · #28481

if anyone is interested I can tell you all exactly what overclocking does to machine life

bluelemonadecrypto · · #28482

there is a very accurate rule of thumb engineers apply to this problem

bluelemonadecrypto · · #28483

as it is used to stress equipment to estimate longevity

bluelemonadecrypto · · #28484

so it is basically every 10Degc hotter you run electronics over rated temp you half the life

bluelemonadecrypto · · #28485

the question here is what is rated temp and rated life for the antminers

hashingpro · · #28486

is that in F or C?

bluelemonadecrypto · · #28487

usually when chips are made there is a lot of variability

bluelemonadecrypto · · #28488

Celcius

dsldsl999 · · #28489

actually how do we know bitmain isn’t already overclocking the device?

bluelemonadecrypto · · #28490

and then the manufacturer sorts them into consumer, industrial and military grade based on tested performance

bluelemonadecrypto · · #28491

but in the case of the antminer chips much evidence points to a fail/pass process

hashingpro · · #28492

pretty sure bitmains are more a PASS FAIL bin

bluelemonadecrypto · · #28493

due to observed variations in temps and HW errors

bluelemonadecrypto · · #28494

so the prudent approach to overclocking is to raise the clock one or two notches, leave for 3 minutes and then observe temps

hashingpro · · #28495

YES which is why the 1080 video card comes in flavors. SU, OC, FTW...each with a differnet overclocking and cooling feature

bluelemonadecrypto · · #28496

once you get a non linear raise in temp for raise in clock you have gone far enough if not too far

hashingpro · · #28497

the L3+ comes with ...standard L3+ settings.

GregoryGHarding · · #28498

@SpacedCowboy :  you dont pay for the exchange service, you pay the 5% fee for mining here and using the switching algorithm PH uses

hashingpro · · #28499

so if we solo or static mine we save the 5%?

GregoryGHarding · · #28500

youre still using the pool

hashingpro · · #28501

but not switching algoryth..cant i get ala carte and save?

hashingpro · · #28502

actually you can, its only 3% on solo mining and 5% on the merged mining from it.

GregoryGHarding · · #28503

if you want to save, set up the coin wallet RPC on your pc and solo mine that way

hashingpro · · #28504

and lose out on 95% of merged mining on this pool, no way!

GregoryGHarding · · #28505

so, you pay the fee :p

hashingpro · · #28506

#freefees4life.

GregoryGHarding · · #28507

free fee? those two words together dosnt make sense

GregoryGHarding · · #28508

if theres a fee it isnt free
