Orphans are caused by other pools finding blocks before we can, due to network latency.

There are certain networks where the difficulty suddenly goes down, and there is a string of blocks where everyone mines them at about one block per second. When that happens, there are always competing chains on the network, and the coin is only worth mining if you're prepared to lose half your blocks.

Our projected payouts account for situations like this, so if you are mining pay-per-share, we are more likely to avoid networks where this happens. If you solo mine, then you accept responsibility for orphans and need to decide for yourself whether the lost money is worth it.
