Mining Newbie With 99 Questions

by narmour · · Post #6570

Hello All,

I'm narmour and I'm wondering if someone with the knowledge to assist will give me a few mins of their time. Will be greatly appreciated.

Quick story: Looking to mine to generate some coins but am completely new to it - I understand the basic principle of mining and I'm more of a hardware enthusiast by nature so typically fall between cliques who do know what they are doing and I now want to make the jump. I have spent a couple days and many evenings trying to figure this out and I haven't hit a successful share yet. I have got some decent hardware that is filtering through my house that I can utilize for mining as appose to a poor re-sell value - decent X79 /X99 based rigs with an E-ATX motherboard etc that I want to use to invest in some GPU's at a later date once I get off the ground. Problem: getting off the ground.

I'm running a watercooled AMD R9 290X at 936 /1250 (lowered GPU clock to keep temps below 75'C) i7 5820k with sufficient cooling.

I am using CGMINER 3.7.2

Code:

{
"pools" : [
	{
		"url" : "prohashing.com:3333",
		"user" : "narmour",
		"pass" : "a=scrypt"
	}
],

"thread-concurrency" : "33792",
"gpu-engine" : "936",
"gpu-fan" : "40-100",
"gpu-memclock" : "1250",

"api-port" : "4028",
"expiry" : "120",
"failover-only" : true,
"gpu-threads" : "1",

"kernel-path" : "/usr/local/bin"
}
Are the settings I am using to run. I have taken the above from various sources during my research phase.

Now I connect to the pool and can see in the dashboard that O am connected but I'm not receiving any shares or any recorded data on this page. I have run the miner for approx 20hrs and nothing. Is this right?

Below is a screenshot of the set-up currently after approx 15 mins which is exactly how it was operating on the 20hr test run. The GPU doesn't seem to be overly taxed either? there's definitely headroom there.

I feel as though I am far from dry land. This is very new to me but I'm really keen to learn and get started. I'm liking the feel of the community here and need a home to establish my mining.

Help get me going so I can drop some £££ on Vega GPU's when they hit!

Many Thanks,

narm
