Since 2.78 is pretty new, did you try an older version of Gminer? There were some connection issues since 2.76 when looking at the github page.

Tried it with GMiner v2.73 and was getting the same result, so that's why I upgraded to the latest version.

It looks like you're not the only one with this issue (see: Re: Ethash Low Memory connection issues)
