"API key requirement allows users to prevent unauthorized miners from mining against their accounts" ... what does it mean when someone mines against my account? What are the dangers involved in that? pros and/or cons? How would I mine against someone elses account? And does mining against my account affect my profitability?

There's no security issue and it's beneficial for people to mine against your account.

There were a few people who complained that trolls would connect offensive worker names to their accounts. If that happens to you, you can use "k=" to disconnect them.
