too many reconnects me thinks
if you disable merge (e=off), this may reduce the hash-still-play from previous mining instance
and that miner count should go down to only the actual quantity miners you have

Is this problem only present with Quark, or are other algorithms affected?

seems to have corrected itself, after opening over 2000 connections

There is something that happens many morning at around 6:30am EST, and I don't know what it is. We'll have to keep looking to see if similar connectivity issues happen every day in the future.
