Old website to be retired on December 28

Post by Steve Sokolowski » Sat Dec 19, 2020 9:07 am

While we had originally intended to leave the old website at https://old.prohashing.com/ online only until the new website was mostly bug-free, we've kept it online longer because there hasn't been a reason to shut it down.

However, on December 28, the old website's SSL certificate will expire, and the Let's Encrypt certificate authority has stopped providing support for Debian 8. To keep the old website online at that point, we'd have to either buy a certificate from another authority, which would cost money, or pay someone to upgrade the server to a later version of Debian, which may not be possible because dependencies required for the old website may no longer be included in newer versions of Debian.

Additionally, as we continue to focus on the new website, it's likely that a security vulnerability will eventually be discovered in the old website's obsolete dependencies that will require us to suddenly take it offline anyway.

Therefore, we're sorry to say that December 28 will be the last day the old website will be around. We hope you're enjoying the new site, and we're glad to accept comments from the 13 customers who are still using the old site to see what things can be improved!
